When Industrial Marking Becomes an Artistic Medium

From the Factory to the Studio: When Technology Changes Context
A technology does not change when it leaves a factory.
What changes is the intention behind its use.
On a production line, a handheld printer is used to identify a product, ensure its traceability, or apply a production code.
In a studio, it becomes a digital brush capable of interacting directly with the material.

Denim as a Canvas for Expression
In 2018, Pablo Genoux presented Merchandise Technique – Handjet on Denim, a project exploring the relationship between industrial technologies and clothing.
Rather than using traditional techniques such as screen printing or embroidery, handheld printing became the project’s primary creative tool. Each intervention was applied directly onto the denim, transforming an industrial process into an artistic gesture.
The speed of the movement, the angle of the printer, and the texture of the fabric all influenced the final result. Marking was no longer simply a production step: it became part of the artwork itself.
The project challenges our perception of clothing, personalization, and contemporary manufacturing while demonstrating that industrial technology can find a place within the fashion world.

This exploration continues with The Way to MoMA: Ceramic Design, an exhibition by Janis Marti and Pablo Genoux presented at Galerie SOON in Switzerland.
Here, ceramics become the field of experimentation. A material traditionally associated with craftsmanship enters into dialogue with a technology developed for industrial environments.
Printing is not intended to replace the artisan’s gesture. Instead, it enriches the creative process by adding a new layer of storytelling to the object.

At DMS Marquage Codage, this reflection has taken on a practical dimension.
As part of the Untold Cowboy project, we used an EBS-250 handheld printer to customize tote bags and shirts directly by hand.
The goal was not to reproduce an industrial production process.
Quite the opposite.
We wanted to demonstrate that a technology developed for industrial marking could also become a creative tool in an artistic and event-based environment.
This experiment allowed us to see how the precision, mobility, and ease of use of the EBS-250 can open new possibilities for designers, artists, emerging brands, and event producers.
