4 tips to extend the life of your CIJ marking equipment

4 conseils pour prolonger la durée de vos équipements de marquage CIJ

For a maintenance manager, the continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer is often a key asset. It runs at high speeds, often 24/7, in environments that aren’t always forgiving (dust, humidity, temperature variations). Yet, we tend to forget about it… as long as it works.

A well-maintained printer is an investment that should pay off for a long time. A machine that is rigorously monitored can last 7 to 10 years. Here are our 4 expert tips to avoid premature wear and turn your machines into the “marathon runners” of production.

1. Respect the golden rule: cleaning the printhead

The printhead is the heart of your system and, paradoxically, the most vulnerable part. Dried ink accumulation is the number one enemy of printing quality.

  • Best practice: Clean the printhead at every start and stop of the line, or according to the manufacturer’s specific recommendations. This prevents ink from freezing in the nozzle.
  • Our advice: Never use compressed air or abrasive objects! A simple cleaning kit with the appropriate solvent is enough. A microscopic scratch on the nozzle or debris blown in by air can compromise the jet’s precision.

2. Fluids and viscosity: the danger of generics

It can be tempting to opt for generic inks or solvents to cut costs in the short term. This is often a false economy.

Original fluids are chemically formulated for the exact viscosity of your pump and filters. An unsuitable fluid can cause:

  • Premature clogging of filters (before the recommended 2,000 to 4,000 hours).
  • Corrosion of internal seals and solenoid valves.
  • Accelerated pump wear is often indicated by unstable pressure.

3. Plan preventive maintenance to avoid emergency shutdowns

Preventive maintenance is always less expensive than corrective maintenance (emergency repairs). Don’t wait for a breakdown!

  • Filters and periodic maintenance: Change the ink and air filters according to the operating hours specified in the manual, even if they appear clean. A clogged filter strains the pump, making it work harder.
  • Prolonged shutdowns: If you must stop your printer for several weeks, never leave it filled with ink. It is imperative to flush the hydraulic circuit with the recommended solvent to prevent permanent clogging.
  • Back up your settings: It’s not mechanics, but it is vital. Always have a recent backup of your machine configurations. In the event of an electronic glitch, you will restart in minutes.

4. The environment matters more than you think

Your CIJ printer is robust and offers many advantages, but environmental factors can affect its performance.

  • Vibrations: Ensure the printer is installed on a stable support and isolated from excessive vibrations coming from other machines. Shaking can misalign the jet.
  • Temperature: Excessive heat can alter ink viscosity and place greater stress on the fluid management system.

Your frequently asked questions about CIJ maintenance

  • What is the lifespan of an industrial CIJ printer?
Between 7 and 10 years if preventive maintenance is respected and the environment is controlled.
  • How often should I clean the printhead?
Ideally, at every production start and stop, or at least once a day.
  • Is it dangerous to use generic inks?
Yes. They can corrode seals and clog filters, reducing pump life and often voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.
